How to get rid of a double chin?

Question:

Hi, I have a slight problem with my chin. I’m 25 year old female, I’m 5’6” and weight about 134 lbs. Although I’m quite slim otherwise, but I get a double chin really easy. It get showing if I just lower my chin or laugh. On the top of this, my neck quite thick and there is some excess skin or fat this and this doesn’t look good at all. There is an important party coming up next summer and I would like to look good then. Is there anything I could do? Is there some exercises that would help my problem, or is the only way to under go a plastic surgery? Otherwise I eat healthy, but I have to confess that candy is my weakness, although I have tried to eat less of them.  What should I do? Exercise and lose a little weight?

Answer:

The problem with chin and neck is much to do with the anatomically shape  of those areas, some just have that kind of chin that they gather excess fat tissue under their chin or get that impression of excess fat around their neck. Even if you otherwise are in good shape and your body is well-proportioned there can still be localized gathering of fat under your chin.

Here comes the inconvenient truth again, as this is popular topic in getting six pack abs, just burning fat from a certain spot on your body is not possible. As you burn fat, the thickness of fat layer all over your body starts to lessen evenly. The problem is just that the fat gathers usually first to these problem areas, and leaves last from them. A double chin and the loosened skin around the neck usually don’t go away with any exercises. Although, a good muscular fitness especially around your shoulders and on upper chest along with good posture will make your neck and under chin area firmer.

There are exercises and exercises machines that you can use to exercise your neck. In general, exercising neck should be done with great care as the structure of the neck is prone to injuries. What I would suggest you to try first is to do first shoulders lifts and upper chest exercises like incline bench press with dumbbells or with barbell. Then if these don’t work, you could try neck exercises, but usually you just end up with a thicker neck as the neck muscles start to grow in result of the exercising. Of course, if you feel that you have some excess fat, you could do different fat burning exercises and usually this is the one exercising method that gets you the desired results. You should remember to stretch your neck muscles with long and calm stretches.

As for the surgery side, there are different aesthetic procedures you could consider. For example excess fat can be removed with liposuction or melted with laser light and the sucked off. I have understood that laser can also be used to tighten the skin around your neck. Fortunately these aren’t big plastic surgery procedures, so think about these if the exercising and fat burning does not work. There are also some injection treatments, the agent that is injected will disperse fat around that area, it can only be used with very local and small areas.

First I would suggest you to try the exercising and then try the other medical options. The effectiveness of the exercising depends much on the person, for some they get rid off the double chin completely as they burn a little fat and for others only the medical operations are the answer.
