Do I need a recovery drink ?
Question:
Is using those different recovery and protein drinks harmful? Do they have some side effects when used for a long time periods? I have read that they shouldn’t posses any harm to one’s health, but some say it isn’t wise either to drink them.
Answer:
Protein powders and recovery drinks are an excellent help for those who take their exercising seriously, like professional athletes and for those who exercise a lot. These people have a need to get more proteins in their diet.
Proteiinijauheet ovat mainio apu lisäravinteena erityisesti kilpaurheilijoilla sekä runsaasti liikuntaa harrastavilla, joilla proteiinin tarve on suurentunut. As a powder, the protein is easy to be taken in as a part of your recovery drink. There are many different kinds of recovery drinks and they have different compositions, and 50 grams of powder doesn’t mean it holds in 50 grams of protein. If you exercise over three times a week and relatively hard, then I think you could take a recovery drink after your exercises.
There should also be a word of caution. You should keep your eyes open and be careful when ordering different supplements from internet, like the recovery powder for your recovery drink. Some of the products have been claimed to hold in different impurities, like wrong ingredients or even banned substances. So buy your supplements from a reliable source.
To answer that question, does it harm your body to take proteins on the long term. Too much of anything is always too much, so too much of proteins will put your body under stress so you shouldn’t take too much of it. You should take about 1-1,5grams / one weight kilogram. If your relatives have had kidney problems, I suggest you consult your doctor first. For an healthy person, protein intake which is in reasonable limits have not been shown to have any harmful side effects on the long run.
Calculate your protein need:
First: Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg
Second: Weight in kg x 1-1.5 gm/kg = protein gm.
