About Abdominals

Abdominals, more commonly called Abs, are a group of muscle groups located at the midsection of your body, between your pubic bone and chest. The abdominal groups are rectus abdominis, which is the upper, middle and lower abs, and then there are transverse abdominis and the obliques. The rectus abdominis start near the middle of the sternum and go vertically to the lowest part of your pelvis. Rectus abdominis are responsible for the curling of your trunk when you do crunches or sit ups. The transverse abdominal muscles go horizontally and are the deepest muscle layer of your abdominal muscles, transverse abdominals go around your body and help to support and compress your internal organs. The obliques consist of external and internal obliques. The external obliques are located on the upper and outer sides of your waistline, they begin under your chest. Obliques are used for torso twisting and side bend motions. The internal obliques are located under the external obliques. Abdominal muscles are involved in a way or another in almost all of the motions you can imagine, where your whole body is moving. Good abdominal muscles help in almost any sport imaginable.

About exercising abdominals

Exercising abdominal muscles have a lot of myths involved. First of all, the abdominal muscles aren't really that different muscle group than any other muscle group. One of the main myths is the one that doing thousands of ab exercises will get you a flat six pack stomach, this isn't true. To get the muscles really showing you need to lose excess fat and that's all there is to it. When exercising abdominal muscles, remember to do controlled motions without rocking your body, the controlled motions will make your abs work hardest. Hard work will get you best results and there simply are no gimmicks that work.
